There's a diner I head to in inner-western Sydney a couple of Fridays a month after an early movie. There is no mood lighting, incense, sitar music. No Rajasthani mirror-work doodads, no travel posters of the Taj Mahal or women with nose-rings.
You won't find its self-taught chef and owner fronting a lifestyle program on free-to-air or pay television.
This place, and others like it, are what you will find here. Not all of them make it into published food guides and most wouldn’t attract any chef's hats in the ratings game. But their food is fantastic – rich in flavour, complex, fresh, piled up on your plate and relatively inexpensive.
Go check them out.
